A tourist in Paphos once hid his weed so well near the hotel that he couldn’t find it two days later. Armed with a small shovel and a metal detector, he spent evenings digging up the lawn, explaining to curious onlookers that he was “searching for ancient Cypriot coins.” Eventually, hotel staff called the police — not for the marijuana, but because he had ruined the entire flowerbed.

Centuries before marijuana appeared, Cyprus already had a history with mind-altering substances. Archaeologists found that as far back as 1600 BCE, locals used opium in rituals, storing it in clay jars shaped like poppy pods. Maybe one day cannabis will hold a similar place in culture — if the laws catch up. Until then, it remains illegal — but very much in demand.
Back in 2015, two farmers in Cyprus planted 4.2 hectares of industrial hemp — a move that quietly sparked a broader conversation about legalization. Just a year earlier, activists had organized the country’s first hemp harvest since the 1960s, near Nicosia.
Cannabis is still illegal on the island, but interest keeps rising — especially in popular tourist spots like Limassol and Larnaca.
In April 2025, police in Limassol attempted to stop a car with “suspicious cargo.” The driver decided the best way to escape was to turn it into a high-speed chase through the city. Eventually, officers found 50 kilograms of cannabis packed into 41 bags inside the vehicle.
In February 2019, Cyprus took its first official step toward cannabis reform by approving medical marijuana. Doctors are now allowed to prescribe it, and licensed companies can grow, import, and sell it for treatment. Recreational use, however, is still against the law.
